Reading: Laura Read and Emily Kendal Frey

Annie Bloom's welcomes Seattle poet Laura Read and local poet Emily Kendal Frey for readings from their latest collections.

About But She Is Also Jane:

Conversational, irreverent, and disarmingly honest, the poems of But She Is Also Jane follow the everyday contours of women's lives and the expectations they grapple with. As our speaker approaches middle age, she copes with the loss of loved ones, the realities of an emptying nest, the routine indignities of sexism, and nostalgia for the past. Laura Read's third poetry collection balances discussions of Degas, Vermeer, and Marie Curie with reflections on Sammy Hagar, a troubling outing to a male revue, and memories of watching Mork and Mindy on the night of her mother's hysterectomy.

Laura Read is the author of But She Is Also Jane, forthcoming from University of Massachusetts Press in 2023, Dresses from the Old Country (BOA, 2018), Instructions for My Mother's Funeral (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2012), and The Chewbacca on Hollywood Boulevard Reminds Me of You (Floating Bridge Press, 2011). She served as poet laureate for Spokane, Washington from 2015-17 and teaches at Spokane Falls Community College and Eastern Washington University.

About Lovability:

Poetry. Art. Lovability is a dialogue of social and interpersonal dynamics, as well as an exploration of the feelings of freedom and longing they produce. "Scourged the river bottom for my lost self"––Frey writes in the collection's final poem, "I Became Less Acceptable to Those in Power"––"Brought them up/ Touched their face/ The armor/ Split and leaking light." A professional counselor and teacher, Frey's work in Lovability uses direct, image-driven poems to name the world we live in.

Emily Kendal Frey lives in Portland, Oregon. She is the author of several chapbooks and chapbook collaborations, including The Grief Performance and Sorrow Arrow (which won the Oregon Book Award). Her latest collection, Lovability, is out from Fonograf Editions. She is a practicing psychotherapist.
