Jenny Milchman & Lauren Sweet: A Road Diverged in a Wood

A Road Diverged in a Wood: Two Writers, Two Choices, Two Very Different Careers

Jenny Milchman and Lauren Sweet met in a writers' group in 1998. Little did either of them know how long their journeys to publication would be, or what different paths they would take. Jenny worked with three agents, wrote eight novels, and received fifteen almost-offers before her Edgar-nominated debut, Cover of Snow, was acquired by Random House in 2011. Lauren wrote two novels and received her Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing in 2008 before becoming fascinated with the complex realm of ebook self-publishing. She now has one novel and the first three segments of a nine-novella series on virtual bookshelves.

The publishing world is evolving near daily. Big 5, small- or micro-press, and self-publishing are all choices. But often these lead to more questions than answers. Is traditional publishing stronger than ever, or as doomed as the dinosaurs? Is self-publishing the next big thing, or a sinkhole for hopeful writers? What's a newbie writer to do, and with more choices than ever, how can readers find quality books?

In a lively, discussion-style format, Jenny and Lauren will talk about the choices they made and how their careers have taken off, answer questions from the audience, and offer ways to find the publication path that might be right for you.

Jenny Milchman's journey to publication took thirteen years, after which she hit the road for seven months with her family on what Shelf Awareness called "the world's longest book tour." Her debut novel, Cover of Snow, was chosen as an Indie Next Pick, reviewed in the New York Times and San Francisco Journal of Books, and nominated for an Edgar/Mary Higgins Clark award. Jenny is also the founder of Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day and chair of International Thriller Writers' Debut Authors Program. Jenny's second novel, Ruin Falls, comes out in April, and she's already filling up the car.

Lauren Sweet is an author and freelance editor who has worked with dozens of authors to develop, revise and edit their novels in preparation for publication and submission. Her clients have been published with small presses such as Ylva Publishing (Germany) and SynergEbooks, and she works with numerous self-published authors. As an author, Lauren has published Aladdin’s Samovar, a humorous suspense novel, and three novellas in her YA paranormal romance series, Bitter Snow. Volumes 4-6 of Bitter Snow are scheduled for release in spring/summer 2014.
