Staff Reviews

The title sounds like this would be a work of science fiction.  Well...not necessarily.  It could be true.  It could happen today.  Mark Watney is stranded on Mars.  His crewmates left him there for dead.  A raging sandstorm forced them to depart hurriedly with no time to retrieve his body.  But he is alive.  And he has no way to communicate this fact back to Earth.  How will he survive?  Will he survive?  Using his training as an astronaut, his knowledge of various scientific fields, and his wits and problem-solving abilities, he manages to get by temporarily.  He keeps a log of his thoughts and activities and through his jottings, his delightful sense of humor comes through to the reader.  This is truly a riveting story that will keep you guessing to the end.

“This taut, cerebral debut thriller introduces readers to the only kind of alien we have yet to encounter: ourselves. Astronaut Mark Watney is mistakenly left for dead on Mars when his mission companions flee a violent wind storm. His mental and physical struggles to survive are a crash course in botany, mechanics, and the will to endure. This is the compelling space saga that you didn't know you had been waiting for!”

Description

A brand-new production of Andy Weir's modern sci-fi classic, narrated by the incomparable Wil Wheaton, and featuring bonus content from the writings of Mark Watney.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills - and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit - he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

Wil Wheaton, who has lent his voice to sci-fi blockbusters like Ready Player One and Redshirts, breathes new life (and plenty of sarcasm) into the iconic character of Mark Watney, making this edition a must-listen for both longtime fans of The Martian and new listeners alike.

BONUS MATERIAL: This edition includes the following extras:

  • "Diary of an AssCan" - Mark Watney, new astronaut
  • "I Made It " - A happy letter to Mom
  • "Car Trouble" - A somewhat sad letter to Mom
  • "The Earthling" - A postscript. *Available for the first time in this recording
