Kathy has been with us since 1999 and is our go-to gal for poetry and spirituality. She also has excellent and eclectic
tastes in literature and loves a good hot cup of chai in the morning.

Erdman spent two years
with the Peace Corps in a small village in the Cote-d'Ivoire. She
writes about falling in love - with brave women who dance all night in
celebration, with proud men inviting her to eat with them, and
especially with the children who crowd her courtyard. Her colorful
descriptions of life in this place reveal her moving from detached
caring to passionate affection for these people. She is open to them
teaching her what it is they need from her. She shares with us her
ambivalence about "improvements" like electricity, which will ease
their labors but which will also expose the village to the seductions
of popular culture. She describes the challanges of weather,
bureaucracy, infant malnutrition, polymamy, genital mutilation, and the
steady and horrifying incursions of AIDS. She grieves, and laughs, and,
finally, dances to honor these people.

Probably my favorite of
the writings of Buddhist philosopher Thich Nhat Hahn, this is an
exploration of the spiritual wonder in everyday life and activities. It
is uplifting and insightful, a great book for finding peace in our busy
everyday lives.
